Have you made it to My Closet Market yet? I made my first trip in September and it was definitely worth it. Did I mention that I drove up from Hobart to get there? Yep, all the way from Hobart to Launceston on a Saturday morning. No, I’m not a crazy woman, it was totally worth it.
My Closet Market stood out in a way that I definitely was expecting: the quality of the market was exceptional.
It runs like clockwork, but this came as no surprise. My Closet Market is overseen by Susannah Slatter, who has years of experience directing Overdressed Market, a very successful preloved market in Hobart. Susannah took over My Closet Market in 2016 and has built it into Launceston’s biggest fashion market for new and preloved clothing, shoes, jewellery and accessories.
My Closet Market has everything you want in a market. It’s easy to find with ample parking close by and the venue is perfect. The stallholders do such a great job making their preloved clothes shine with creative displays and signage. The whole feel of the place was professional yet friendly; you can tell that this market has been around for over five years.
Needless to say, the quality of clothing was outstanding. I found myself lusting over a stunning silk dress, some Marc Jacobs bejewelled sandals with cushioned footbed (see below, so luxe!), the perfect organic cotton shirt, some high waisted Wrangler denim jeans, the tailored jacket of my corporate dreams and an almond croissant, which was especially delicious. Yes, even the food was amazing!
My Closet Market stood out in a way that I wasn’t expecting: it’s so inclusive.
The price. With so many options and inclusive pricing, there really was something for everyone. There were basics and accessories for under $5, with racks of clothes $10 and under. I was also impressed by the higher end designer clothing - all at great prices, of course - including pieces from independent designers, leading streetwear labels and designer footwear.
The plus. Often preloved fashion markets can be a size 6-14 affair, but at My Closet Market there were so many sizes to choose from. There were multiple racks dedicated to sizes starting at 18, stocked with breezy linen shirts, every shade of denim, cute patterned skirts and beautifully tailored jackets. Can I get a high-five?
The men. Hello gentlemen, fancy seeing you at a preloved fashion market. I’m sorry Hobart, you put on a good market but you often fail to include much menswear. My boyfriend ended up buying more than I did (this is a big deal for us!) and his haul included some amazing artisan-made leather boots and a quirky cap. Hot tip: bring your significant male other, he’ll thank you for it later.
My trip to Launceston’s My Closet Market was more than worth it (told you I wasn’t crazy) and with summer and party season coming up, I can’t wait to fill some holes in my wardrobe with beautiful, new-to-me pieces at the November market. Hope to see you there!
